People's Inauguration

Note: For a follow up to the 2017 event invitation below, please visit Power and Representation: A Forum for the Kresge Community on Medium.

We invite you to a series of opportunities for action, developing from Monday's celebration of the life of Martin Luther King, and leading up to the Inauguration of our president elect. In Washington D.C., more than 53 years ago, Dr. King delivered a Dream for civil liberty and social justice, and in the decades since generations of students, writers, teachers, and organizers have built on its foundation. Inaugural speeches are, in some way, also a kind of a dream ... and so Porter College and Kresge College have decided to come together to write our own — we'll call it The People's Inauguration.

But we need your help. On Monday and Tuesday evenings (see below) we'll join together for a plan to write together, to speak, hear, and be heard, and more importantly, to collaborate, in building an expression that we can believe, together, represents our democracy, our capacity, as people, to lead.
Here are the specifics:

Monday, January 16, 2017: 5-7 pm — Porter Hitchcock Lounge

Tuesday, January 17: 5-7 pm — Porter College Study Center

Please join Kresge and Porter faculty (see above for locations) to hear Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech from the March on Washington, hear some additional literature in the legacy of American civil rights struggle—Leslie Feinberg, Majora Carter, and others—and help us begin a community process of drafting our own dream—a reaffirmation, and an inauguration, of a United States governed by and for us.
