Construction Updates, Activities and Impacts: July 3, 2024

REMINDER:  Kresge is home to an active construction site. For the safety of all individuals unauthorized individuals need to stay out of the fenced off areas.

Phase I

Res. Halls and Academic Building:

  • Final punch list in process

Kresge Project Phase II

Typical work schedule is 8 am – 4 pm M-F. 

After hours and weekend work is expected throughout the course of construction. Every measure is being taken to minimize the noise levels on the work site for after hours and weekend work.  We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding while we improve the campus and the community. 

Site work

  • Kresge L building – ongoing coordination and design layout adjustments
  • Utilities Install Ongoing
  • Design layout adjustments for final design is in progress
  • Scaffolding is up for A2 (old classroom cluster) stucco being removed
  • Plaster removal is near completion on A1 (old academic building)
  • Storm water pollution prevention (SWPP) measures are in place and holding

Phase II will encompass the renovation, rebuild and/or demolition of existing buildings at Kresge College Proper.  Phase II is scheduled to be fully completed by Fall 2025.  Some spaces may come on line earlier when possible.

Buildings to be renovated

A1 – Former home to the Kresge College Office, STARS, HSI and Academic offices

  • The main floor will be home to the Kresge Mailroom, College Programs Office, public Study Lounge, Laundry Room and residential Study Lounge.
  • The top two floors will be converted to residence hall style bed space consisting of singles, doubles and triples.

R12 – Former home to Seminar room 159 and kitchen, Arts Division offices, and Photo Co-op

  • The ground floor will be home to a public study space, work space and storage for the Programs Office and Residential Life.
  • Second floor will be home to storage space for Seminar Room 159, Seminar Room 159, kitchen for special events and restrooms.

R13 – Former home to the Vets Office, Commuter Lounge and Kresge Student Lounge

  • The renovated building will include space for a new Music Co-op, Commuter Lounge and Rec Room

G2 – Former home to Arts Division offices, Kresge Writing Center and Study space

  • Building will be renovated to house student study/gathering space, space for college sponsored events, offices for Kresge CORE Course /Enhancement Class Instructors, public restrooms, and Academic records storage. An elevator will be added to this building.

A2 – former home of classrooms

  • This building will house the Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students (STARS), Vets and Hispanic Serving Institute (HSI) offices.

Buildings to be rebuilt

Apartment Buildings R1, R2, R4, R6, R8 and R9

  • These buildings will be rebuilt to be three floors to include two floors of 5 person, (1 double, 1 triple) apartments and one floor as a traditional residence hall floorplan with singles, double and triples.
  • R8 will have a laundry room in addition to the laundry room in building A1

R10 – Former student apartment space and the Kresge Natural Food Co-op

  • One floor will be home to the Porter/Kresge/Redwood Grove Housing/Residential Life and Residential Community Service Partner (RCSP) (formerly known as Community Safety Officers (CSO) Offices
  • The Housing/Res. Life Offices currently housed in J third floor will move over to R10 in Fall 25 freeing up the 18 apartment spaces in J building for residential assignment.
  • There will be several residential floors in this building. Final design pending.

  • R3 site will be the home to open seating and accessible pathway from upper Kresge to the lower Kresge plaza area
  • R5 site will be additional landscaping and access to upper street
  • R11 site will be home to the new Town Hall and Lounge

  • The ground floor of this building will be home to the Maintenance shop and the Porter/Kresge Business Office
  • 5 floors of 5 person apartments, (1 double, 1 triple)

Town Hall, public lounge and public gender-neutral restrooms

  • Town Hall will be a major event space
  • The Lounge adjacent to the Town Hall will a designated public lounge for the community.
  • Gender neutral restrooms will be a part of this building complex.

R10 – Former student apartment space and the Kresge Natural Food Co-op*

  • One floor will be home to the Porter/Kresge/Redwood Grove Housing/Residential Life and Residential Community Service Partner (RCSP) (formerly known as Community Safety Officers (CSO) Offices
  • The Housing/Res. Life Offices currently housed in J third floor will move over to R10 in Fall 25 freeing up the 18 apartment spaces in J building for residential assignment.
  • There will be several residential floors in this building. Final design pending.

The Kresge Natural Food Co-op did have space in R12 as a part of the Kresge renewal. Unfortunately, the Food Co-op went out of business and no longer exists. College staff have looked into the possibility of hosting a university sponsored Food pantry at Kresge. At this time, that is not a possibility. However, it will be something we will pursue in the future. In the meantime, Kresge students will have access to a variety of food locations on the West side.

Porter Market - Porter Market offers grab-n-go meals, snacks, bottled beverages, smoothies, organic espresso drinks made-to-order, plus grocery and convenience items.

The second floor of Building A will include a large lounge that will be utilized for RA programs and general use by the residents of all three buildings.  This building will also include a program kitchen for Resident Assistants to use with their residents and an allergy kitchen for those students that have gone through the Disability Resource Center accommodation process whose dietary needs cannot be met by our dining program.

The basement of the North building is where the dining program will have storage and offices that will support the new "Owls Nest" cafe.  The second floor of the North building will contain the 'Owls Nest " Cafe.

The second floor of each building will be general use space for the residents of this building complex.  Elements on the second floor for each building will be a little different from one another.

The second floor of Building A will include a large lounge that will be utilized for RA programs and general use by the residents of all three buildings.  This building will also include a program kitchen for Resident Assistants to use with their residents and an allergy kitchen for those students that have gone through the Disability Resource Center accommodation process whose dietary needs cannot be met by our dining program. 

Building B second floor will include a laundry room and a general lounge.

The basement of the North building is where the dining program will have storage and offices that will support the new "Owls Nest" cafe.  The second floor of the North building will contain the 'Owls Nest " Cafe.

The third, fourth, fifth and sixth floor of each building is residential space.

Finals week:  The Project crews have been informed of Finals week coming up and have scheduled more quiet work for this time March 11th – 18th.  There will be no Saturday work on March 12.

RNew South (Building A) Residence Hall:   

  • Insultation installation is ongoing, Level 3 and Level 4 completed
  • Dry wall work is starting on Level 4 down to the lower floors
  • Z girts on North and West elevations are complete. Insulation to follow.

RNew Middle (Building B) Residence Hall:

  • HVAC rough in complete on lower floors
  • Stairs are complete and signed off on. Concrete infill at stairs is ongoing.

RNew North (Building C) Residence Hall:  

  • Fire Sprinkler work has started
  • Scaffolding on exterior has begun
  • Roof work is ongoing

The three RNew Residence Halls are 6 stories high.  The lower level floor is for mechanical equipment. The second floor of each building will be general use space for the residents of this building complex.  Elements on the second floor for each building will be a little different from one another.

The second floor of  Building A will include a large lounge that will be utilized for RA programs and general use by the residents of all three buildings.  This building will also include a program kitchen for Resident Assistants to use with their residents and an allergy kitchen for those students that have gone through the Disability Resource Center accommodation process whose dietary needs cannot be met by our dining program. 

Building B second floor will include a laundry room and a general lounge.

The basement of the North building is where the dining program will have storage and offices that will support the new "Owls Nest" cafe.  The second floor of the North building will contain the 'Owls Nest " Cafe.

The third, fourth, fifth and sixth floor of each building is residential space. 

Academic Building:

  • The large Crane has been removed. One crane left on site.
  • Exterior framing begins next week
  • Timber installation is ongoing

Project Overview:

UCSC is renewing and expanding Kresge College undergraduate housing, academic programming and student support spaces. The Kresge College Major Revitalization Project includes three new residential buildings for first year and continuing students, adding 402 beds, sitewide ADA upgrades, and completion of a new academic building which includes a 600-person lecture hall.

Plans are being finalized to identify how the existing Kresge Proper apartments (R1, R2, R3, R4, R6, R8, R9, R10, R11) will be renovated, The plan will determine how many apartment beds will be brought on line for continuing Kresge students.  In the past we have been limited on how many beds were available at Kresge Proper for continuing students.

Kresge J & K are not scheduled for renovation and will continue to be made available to Kresge continuing students.

The construction project utilizes many Green building techniques, including locally sourced materials, sustainable building products, and is expected to achieve LEED silver and gold when complete. The buildings themselves will be efficient by minimize energy consumption and waste, and includes an innovative sitewide rainwater harvesting and locally grown indigenous plants. The project also works to minimize its impact on the local environment by implementing storm water pollution prevention measures, biological surveys, tree protection zones, and more.

Weekend work: 

There will be some work done on the weekends to try and get work done prior to the rainy season, (I think we still have a rainy season).  When weekend work is scheduled the Residential Life office will send out a notice to all residents 48 hours prior to the weekend work.

The walls for the second – fifth floors of the RNew South Residence Hall have begun to go up. The third floor exterior and interior walls are in place.  The fourth floor is beginning to be built.  The walls for these floors will be constructed with cross-laminated timber (CLT).

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a large-scale, prefabricated, solid engineered wood panel. Lightweight yet very strong, with superior acoustic, fire, seismic, and thermal performance, CLT is also fast and easy to install, generating almost no waste onsite. CLT offers design flexibility and low environmental impacts.

Concrete has been poured for floors in the RNew Middle Residence Hall.   The RNew North Residence Halls concrete pours are in process.

The walls for the second – fifth floors of the RNew South Residence Hall have begun to go up. The walls for these floors will be constructed with cross-laminated timber (CLT).

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a large-scale, prefabricated, solid engineered wood panel. Lightweight yet very strong, with superior acoustic, fire, seismic, and thermal performance, CLT is also fast and easy to install, generating almost no waste onsite. CLT offers design flexibility and low environmental impacts.

Concrete is being poured on the RNew Middle and RNew North Residence Halls.

The three RNew buildings are 5 stories high.  The first floor of each building will be general use space for the residents of this building complex.  Elements on the first floor for each building will be a little different from one another.

The first floor of the South building will include a large lounge that will be utilized for RA programs and general use by the residents of all three buildings.  This building will also include a program kitchen for RAs to use with their residents and an allergy kitchen for those students that have gone through the DRC accommodation process whose dietary needs cannot be met by our dining program. 

The middle building first floor will include a laundry room and a general lounge.

The basement of the North building is where the dining program will have storage and offices that will support the new "Owls Nest" cafe.  The first floor of the North building will contain the 'Owls Nest " Cafe.

The second, third, fourth and fifth floor of each building is residential space.  Each floor will house 35 students plus one RA. Each floor will have three singles, five triples and six large triples, a common bathroom and a lounge. The residential floors of these buildings will be wood frame construction.

Academic Building: Foundation work continues on for the new academic building.  Rebar has been set and concrete has been poured.  Support walls are starting to go up.

The project keeps pushing on.  Swinnerton Construction has laid the foundations for the three new residential buildings and are in the process of pouring the concrete walls that will make up the first floor of each building.  As a reminder the three new buildings are 5 stories high.  The first floor of each building will be general use space for the residents of this building complex.  Elements on the first floor for each building will be a little different from one another.

The foundation for the new academic building which is located where the old Town Hall/Cafe/Programs office spaces were housed is in the process of being prepared for the concrete slab to be poured.  The Academic building will include the following:

  • Classroom space: 600 seat lecture hall, 150 seat classroom, 50 seat classroom, 35 seat classroom
  • Computer lab
  • Film & Digital Media office space
  • History of Arts & Visual Communication (HVAC) office space
  • Science Communication department
  • Writing Department office space
  • Kresge Academic Office

RNEW Residence Halls: The foundation work continues for all three buildings.  There have been concrete pours for RNEW South and RNEW Middle buildings.  Foundation framing for RNEW North is to begin this coming week. 

Cell Tower Removal:  The Cell Tower located on apartment building R4 is being relocated to Apartment Building R2 in preparation of work to be done on R4 in the future.

Covid-19 – Protocols are being followed on-site.

Construction Updates, Activities and Impacts: March 26, 2020

R8 pathway – The pathway behind R8 is now open again for foot traffic.

Utility work – Porter/Kresge Road – Work Crews have marked the road to locate utilities that run underneath the road. If needed potholing will begin shortly.  The road will remain open and have traffic control staff on the road as needed. 

Town Hall Complex – The Town Hall Complex demolition got delayed a week due to the weather.  Demo will begin March 30thand is scheduled to last approximately three weeks.

RNEW Residence Halls– Shotcrete work has been completed.  Concrete work is to begin soon.

 

Construction Updates, Activities and Impacts: Februrary 28, 2020

 Power Outage:  March 2, 2020 – R6 & R8 – 7 am – 4 pm the power will be out in these two buildings in order to reroute the fire alarm panels from Town Hall to R8.  If work goes well, power may be restored earlier than 4 pm. Residential students will receive an additional notice about the power outage.

Fire Alarm Testing: March 4 & March 5 - As a check to make sure all the alarms at Kresge Proper are back on-line after the Town Hall fire panel re-route there will be testing on March 4 & March 5 starting after 9 am.  Fire Alarms will go off in all of the buildings located in Kresge Proper at various times during these two days.  The buildings impacted include all residential buildings as well as all academic buildings. When an alarm goes off in your building please evacuate.  You can return to your building once the alarms are silenced unless instructed otherwise by on-site staff.  Staff will also be going into selected individual rooms to make sure the local alarms are working properly during these two days of testing. Staff will be on-site to establish a Fire Watch for the days that the alarms are off-line, March 2 & March 3.

Porter/Kresge Road – Safety Concerns:  The road is closed to all non-authorized traffic 24/7. Construction is picking up and the roads are getting more and more impacted with equipment and moving vehicles.

Water main work along the Porter/Kresge Road is now completed.

Shoring - Shoring systems for the project is underway and will continue for the next two weeks 

Finals Week: Work will still continue on-site, but it will be what is called “quiet work” so there shouldn’t be excessive noise coming from the construction site during Finals.

 Town Hall Complex – Additional abatement needs to take place in the Town Hall so the demolition date has been changed.  The Town Hall complex is now scheduled for demolition the week of March 23rd.  

Wood from the old Rec room and the old Town Hall have been salvaged and are currently stored in the Kresge Student Lounge.  The wood will be used for the flooring in the new Town Hall.

February 18, 2020  You will see an increase in people walking the Kresge Site on that day.  We are in the bid process for the Final Phase of the project and a number of sub-contractors will be on-site getting information in preparation to submit their bids for working on the project.  Swinerton staff will be out helping direct traffic and getting the sub-contractors parked so that there is minimal traffic congestion.

Porter/Kresge Road – Safety Concerns:  We still have some bicyclists using the Porter/Kresge Road from Kresge lot 145 to Heller Drive.  Please stay off this road. The road is closed to all non-authorized traffic 24/7. 

Water main along the Porter/Kresge Road is scheduled to be completed by the end of next week.

Shoring - Shoring systems for the project will be constructed for the next three weeks.

Town Hall Complex – Abatement of the Town Hall Complex is now completed.  The next phase of work includes rerouting electrical and fire alarm systems in preparation of the demolition phase of the complex.

 

Construction Updates, Activities and Impacts: January 16, 2020

The Kresge North Bridge near the Town Hall will be closed on Tuesday, January 21ststarting at 7 am. Fencing will go up to block access to the bridge.  The construction crew is doing electrical work behind R8 and they need controlled access to the bridge.  Please use the South Bridge located near the Porter in-fill apartments and the I Lounge. If you are coming from the Kresge bus stop there is a pathway through Redwood Grove apartments that will get you to the South Bridge.  

We ask that pedestrian traffic stay off of Heller Drive.  The work is scheduled to last one day.  Once the work is completed access to the bridge will resume.  

Porter/Kresge Road – Safety Concerns:  We still have some bicyclists and pedestrians using the Porter/Kresge Road from Kresge lot 145 to Heller Drive.  Please stay off this section of the road. The road is closed to all non-authorized traffic 24/7. 

Construction is starting to ramp up near and on this road. A water main is scheduled to start being installed along the Porter/Kresge Road next week.

 

Construction Updates, Activities and Impacts: January 2, 2020

A fence is up behind R8 to block passage to the dirt path behind the building.  The path will be blocked until around 1/17/20.  The Construction crew are doing temporary power and fire alarm work in this area and they need to block the path off from pedestrian traffic.

The Porter/Kresge road going North from Kresge lot 145 to Heller Drive is blocked off  for construction traffic only.  No unauthorized vehicles, bicycles or pedestrians should be on this stretch of road for the duration of the project.

R7, the Triplets, and the Rec room have now been taken down.  

Asbestos abatement in the Town Hall Complex is in process and the demolition of this building will begin soon.  The Town Hall Complex is the last building to come down during the first phase of construction.

The construction trailers are now on site.  They  are located in part of lot 147 next to Annex B and the I Lounge.  The remaining lot is available for regular permit parking.

Kresge Lot 143 is available for regular permit parking.  Kresge Lot 145 is currently off-line for a Physical Plant project not related to the Kresge Renewal project.  Lot 145 is anticipated to become available for regular permit parking in mid-January.

 

Construction Updates, Activities and Impacts  November 26, 2019

  • Contractor is working on isolating utilities in preparation for demo of R7, Triplets, Rec Center and eventually Town Hall.
  • Excavation will be starting in the forested area, (also known as the Kresge Meadow) where the new residential halls will be located
  • R7 demo will be starting soon, as soon as the Contractor isolates utilities.  We anticipate this will be next week.  
  • Abatement for the triplets and rec center will continue.
  • Jobsite trailers will arrive sometime in December; we are working on finalizing a new date with the Contractor
  • A small closet is scheduled to be built in the Kresge Student Lounge to store the wood flooring from the racquet ball court that is going to be repurposed in the new Town Hall building
  • The December 5thTown Hall meeting is going to be rescheduled for some time in January.

  • We anticipate trailers will be brought to the site on November 18th.

The next Town Hall meeting to discuss the Kresge Renewal Project is Wednesday, November 13, 6 pm - 7:30 pm in the I Lounge located across from Kresge J & K apartments.

The initial site preparation has been completed.  We are now in the set-up stage for Swinerton Construction company to come in and begin preparation for construction to fully begin.

 

Construction Updates, Activities and Impacts: October 10, 2019

October

  • Work time when school is in session typically runs 8am—4pm, Monday—Friday
  • Once construction begins, Porter/Kresge Road will be closed to the public from upper Heller (near North Perimeter Lot 150) to lot 143 thru August 2021
  • Contractor traffic/emergency vehicles will be one-way southbound form Upper Heller to lot 143 through the duration of this closure
  • Pedestrian traffic from Camper park will need to use the sidewalk on Heller Drive once the Porter/Kresge Road is closed off for construction and emergency vehicles.

November

  • Swinerton Construction will start to bring in their trailers to be used for their on-site offices November 1. Kresge main lot 145 will be closed off to all non-construction parking. 
  • Lot 143 will be partially used for a construction trailer and the remaining lot
