About Provost Mayanthi Fernando

Associate Professor Mayanthi Fernando is provost of Kresge College. She is a faculty member in the Department of Anthropology and co-Director of the Center for Cultural Studies. Fernando also served as Interim Provost of College Nine and John R. Lewis College in 2020–2021.

Her scholarship aligns with Kresge’s core course on “Power and Representation.” She is the author of The Republic Unsettled: Muslim French and the Contradictions of Secularism (2014) and is finishing a second book on “the secular uncanny,” which draws on Islamic studies and animal studies.

As provost, Fernando listens and responds to the needs of Kresge’s students, staff, and faculty, collaborates on new initiatives, and serves as an advocate for undergraduate education. She explores incorporating a component on Islamophobia and the War on Terror into Kresge’s core course and contributes to the new Academic Integrity system with an emphasis on prevention, education, and restorative practices.
