Alarms
Failure to evacuate an apartment building when a smoke/fire alarm is sounding
is a violation of policy. You must evacuate any university building or residential
area when a fire alarm is sounding. Be aware that many fire alarms can be
turned off only by the fire department and you must vacate the building until
fire personnel give the all clear, even if you believe it is a false alarm.
Do not hang anything or tamper with the sprinkler heads and pipes in your
ceilings.
Alcohol
The University and Kresge College expect students to abide by all federal,
state and local laws regarding the use of alcohol and other drugs. It is
a violation of state and federal law and policy for minors to purchase, possess,
or be under the influence of alcohol. It is also a violation of the law and
University policy for anyone over 21 years of age to supply, sell or furnish
alcohol to anyone under the age of 21. Even for students who are over 21,
alcohol cannot be consumed in any ‘public’ or ‘semipublic’ place
within the university. This includes any area outside your apartment, such
as balconies, front porches, walkways, lounges, and parking lots, inside
vehicles, on meadows, recreational areas or playing fields. Common source
containers, pony kegs, or kegs are not permitted in the apartments. The possession
of a keg or large amounts of alcohol will result in cancellation of your
housing contract.
Amplified or Loud Instruments
or Sounds
Electric, electronic, or amplified instruments along with other instruments
or sounds that are loud or whose sound carries throughout the college or through
the ground (such as bass woofers) may only be played in the Music Coop, or
during Kresge Loud Hours (Fri. & Sat. 5-8pm) This includes, but is not
limited to: electric guitars, all kinds of percussion, loud brass or woodwind
instruments, synthesizers, loud computer music, loud stereos and disc jockey
equipment.
Balconies, Walkways, and Stairs
These areas are considered part of your apartment space and you are responsible
for keeping them clean, uncluttered, and in compliance with the fire and
safety regulations on campus. Storage of trash, recycling, bicycles or other
items in these areas is strictly prohibited by the fire code. The walkways
and stairs are thruways for the residents of the apartment and building and
it is imperative that they be kept clean and free of obstructions. It is
a violation of Kresge policy to purposely drop or throw any item from a balcony.
This includes water balloons, any liquid, cigarettes or any item that could
cause harm or injury. It is also important that you do not put items on your
balcony railing that could fall in an earthquake, wind or if bumped.
Behavior
Any student who, by virtue of their behavior to themselves or others, shows
an inability to be a member of the Kresge College community will be asked
to leave or be restricted from the college housing units. They may also be
asked to commit to a behavioral contract which may involve the intervention
of other resources as prescribed through the disciplinary process.
BBQ’s and
Fires
Fires are prohibited at Kresge College and all over UCSC. Because of fire and damage concerns, no combustible BBQs or Grills are permitted at Kresge. This ban includes
propane camping stoves, and gas or charcoal grills. If grills or bbqs are seen being used at Kresge, they will extinguished immediately. Further, lighter fluid or any other flammable
liquids may not be stored in the residences. If you would like to hold an event that uses one of the college’s gas grills, please contact your CA or the College Programs Office for more information.
Bicycles
Bikes must not block walkways, hallways, stairways or entrance ways. This is
a safety issue as well as a University fire code regulation. Bicycles may
be ridden only on bike paths, fire roads and areas designated as for bicycles.
They cannot be ridden on many of the dirt paths throughout campus or in Nature
Reserve areas. Store your bicycle by locking it to any of the bicycle racks
throughout Kresge. Bicycles locked to other objects will be removed.
Cancellation of Housing
The housing contract is binding for the entire academic year. Request for termination
(cancellation) of the contract can only be granted for the following conditions:
if the student graduates; if the student withdraws; if the student is registered
in a field study program outside of Santa Cruz County; if the student marries;
or if the student receives special college permission. Please see the UCSC
Terms and Conditions contract booklet for detailed information on cancellation
filing periods. Failure to file during the cancellation period will result
in a $100.00 fee.
Candles
Candles are not allowed to be burned in the residences at any time. Flashlights
and extra batteries are encouraged for power outages.
Dangerous Items
Firearms, paintball guns, squirt guns that look like real guns, slingshots,
martial arts weapons, swords, folding knives or knives over 2 inches—including
scuba knives and folding knives over 2 1/2 inches—or any other dangerous
items, even for display purposes, are prohibited. If you have them, you must
remove them from campus. If you are not able to remove them immediately,
talk with the Kresge Housing office about where you must take them in the
interim. If you believe you need an item for a class or club, talk with the
Housing office. We will recommend some alternative places to keep your ‘weapons’ between
classes or club meetings. They are not allowed in your residences.
Drugs
You must adhere to all federal, state and local laws as they pertain to illegal
substances. The University, as well as federal and state law, prohibits the
transportation, possession or sale of illicit drugs. Violation of these laws
and policies will result in judicial action at the college level, and may
also result in police and local, state and/or federal intervention.
Event policy
An event (or party) is defined as a gathering two times the number of residents in an apartment plus one. Residents are only permitted a total of guests equal to the amount of total residents. For example, if four residents live in an apartment, only four total guests are allowed to visit at one time. Even if a resident is not there, no more than four guests are allowed. An event may also consist of fewer people if there are noise and/or alcohol/drug violations taking place. If you would like to host an event, you must get permission and event forms from the Student Life Office. Event permit forms must be obtained, and completed, 72 hours before to the proposed event. All necessary signatures must also be obtained with that 72 hour pre-event period, not on the day of the event. Residents and their guests are prohibited from having alcohol or drugs at any college event, regardless of the age of the participants. Residents of the apartment are held responsible for the behavior of those attending the event, invited or not. (See Spontaneous Event Policy)
Fire safety equipment
Tampering with smoke detectors in residences, fire alarm stations, or fire
extinguishing devices are violations of University fire code. Violators will
face college judicial action and can face university sanctions as well. We
take tampering with fire equipment seriously.
Frisbee, Soccer, Volleyball,
and Other Games Using Propelled Objects
Use these items only in the Kresge meadow. Because of the damage they do to
the plants and windows and risk of pedestrian safety, they are not allowed
on the Kresge streets, walkways or near landscaping.
Garbage, Recycling and Compost
Containers for these items may not block walkways, balconies or stairs. In
addition, if left outside the apartment, these items will attract animals
and are considered a health and safety hazard. Empty them often and take
all items to the appropriate dumpster or collection area. All cardboard should
be broken down and placed in cardboard dumpsters and no trash should be placed
in any recycling containers.
Guests
Kresge residents are responsible for the behavior of their guests at all times.
If the guest breaks policies or laws, the host student will be held responsible
by the college. A guest is any person who is visiting your apartment. It
is the host’s responsibility to inform guests that they are obligated
to abide by all campus, federal, state and local laws while visiting. Per
your housing contract, overnight guests are limited to a maximum of three
consecutive days and a cumulative total of fifteen days during an academic
year. Hosts may face charges, fines, or face judicial sanctions or loss of
housing if they have guests for longer than stipulated in the contract.
Harassment
Physical or verbal harassment is not permitted by students, staff or faculty.
It is the policy and mission of the University and Kresge College that the
learning environment shall be free from acts of harassment of any kind. Acts
or behavior that are hostile or intimidating towards any person are not acceptable
in this community and are against University policy, the Kresge Statement
of Community Ethics, and the law. Behavior or acts committed while under
the influence of a substance are not considered any less serious. You are
responsible for your actions at all times.
Inspections
There are several kinds of inspections that are done during the academic year
in the apartments. All apartments have quarterly cleaning, maintenance and
fire inspections. Notice is given in advance to residents advising that staff
will be entering the apartments.
Inspections for Fire Safety,
Cleaning, and Maintenance
These inspections will be conducted several times during the year. You will
receive advance notice.
Keys
Residents are issued their apartment keys at move in and return them at check
out. Loss or failure to return keys will result in a penalty of $40 per key.
If you lose your key, come to the Residential Life Office for a replacement.
If you are locked out, call your CA, Preceptor, the Residential Life Office
or the Proctor so they can open your door. If you leave something in another
resident’s room, we will not unlock the door for you. Wait for the
resident to return.
Leases, Subleasing
Your housing contract does not allow you to sublease your housing at any time.
You have signed a one-year housing lease and there are very specific instances
in which you or the College may cancel your lease without financial penalty.
Read your Terms and Conditions booklet or check with the Kresge Residential
Life office if you have any questions.
Lofts
By fire code, students are not allowed to build any kind of loft in their residences
or rooms. You may check with the Facilities Staff (459-4458) for any approved
methods of raising your beds to make more space.
Loud Hours
Loud noise is aloud within the college Friday and Saturday, 4-6pm only. Amplified
music and other particularly loud music is acceptable during these times.
Respecting any persons request for a lowering of noise, when asked, is what
makes “loud hours” work.
Mopeds/Motorcycles
These and any gasoline-powered vehicles are not allowed in or near the residences.
They must be parked in lots, are subject to all vehicle codes and may be
driven only on roads. They may not be ridden through the college residential
areas at any time.
Noise
In order to preserve the academic and community standards of Kresge College
it is required that noise levels be held at a minimum during class hours
and at reasonable levels at other times. If you wish to establish a reasonable
level of noise for day, evening, and quiet hours, you may talk with your
CA, CRE and/or Proctor. During quiet hours, noise should not be heard outside
of your room or apartment. Please remember the general philosophy that the
right to quiet supersedes the right to make noise.
Paraphernalia
Delivering, furnishing transferring, manufacturing and possessing drug paraphernalia
is strictly prohibited anywhere on the grounds of the college. Drug paraphernalia
is defined here as all equipment, material and products intended for use
or designed for use in growing, processing, harvesting, storing, concealing,
injecting, ingesting, inhaling, or otherwise introducing a controlled substance
into the human body. For further information on this policy please refer
to a residential staff person.
Pets
There can be no animals, including amphibians or fish, in the Kresge residential
areas. Pets cannot be taken in or kept in any residential area at any time.
Roofs
Residents and their guests are prohibited from being on the roofs of the residences
or any other building at Kresge College.
Room Switches, Roommates, Empty
Spaces, Reassignments
The Residential Life Office does all room switches. You may not arrange or
do room switches on your own. If you want to switch rooms, come to the office
and sign up. If you have an empty space in your apartment, you must keep it
empty and leave space for incoming students on the shelves in kitchen and bathroom.
Skateboards, Rollerblades, Rollerskates,
and People Powered Scooters
The use of the above items is prohibited at UCSC. You must carry (not ride)
these items at all times if you have them on campus. UCSC police give citations
for violations of this policy and you may also face college judicial action.
The use of these items is also a violation of the noise policy and may be enforced
as such.
Smoking
Kresge College does not permit smoking inside any University building including apartments,
classrooms, and other facilities. Smoking will not be permitted on balconies or patios or in front
of any building. Smoking will only be permitted in college parking lots and specified locations
at least 25 feet from a doorway, window or vent. Residents or guests who violate this policy
will be subject to fines and/or judicial sanctions. Incense burning is also not allowed in apartments.
Spontaneous Event
Policy (see event policy)
Impromptu events need to be approved by the CA on duty, CRE, Proctor (if at
night), or CPC (depending on who is available) as soon as it is evident that
such an event will be taking place.
Tapestries, Wall Hangings
In most cases, unless these are tacked tightly to the walls, they are considered
fire hazards. Placing them on the ceiling is forbidden by fire code.
