Kresge offers a transfer student section of the Core Course, Kresge 80T: Power and Representation that is specifically designed for incoming transfer students. Readings in this section are similar to the work for first year students, but they are focused to address issues particular to transfer students as they move into their upper division courses in their majors: the expectations of faculty, strategies for successful writing, how to structure ideas and knowledge in a discipline. Core sections are limited to 24 students in order to provide an opportunity for students to work closely with the instructor and each other in a seminar setting. This is especially valuable for transfer students, who often find themselves in large courses or are looking for a course where they can hone their reading and writing skills. Transfer students have told us that the course has provided them a place to translate conceptual issues in their disciplines into a broader social and cultural context. In addition, for transfers who have not satisfied IGETC, the core course satisfies two general education requirements (a "W" [Writing] and a "T" [Topical]).

Power and Representation explores rhetorical principals, and conventions of university discourse, providing intensive practice in analytical writing, critical reading, and speaking. We explore the relationships between individuals and their communities - communities as small as families and friendship, colleges and cities; communities as large as nations and the world. We will examine the many ways we constitute ourselves as individuals in relation to communities, focusing on representations of class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, and race in several genres - critical theory, film, art, fiction, non-fiction and theater.
